 to say', 'to tell', 'to speak'를 사용한 연어 표현을 배우세요

 

• She decided to finally speak her mind, tell the truth, and say sorry for the misunderstanding.

  그녀는 마침내 솔직하게 털어놓고, 진실을 말하고, 오해에 대해 사과하기로 했습니다.

"to speak", "to say" and "to tell" have similar meanings but are not used interchangeably.

He's not afraid to speak his mind, no matter the situation.

• Theo said that that day they were going to answer one of the most asked questions.

  테오는 그날 그들이 가장 흔한 질문 중 하나에 답하려 했다고 말했습니다.

 

• Theo said there's loads of different things they do to make money.

  테오는 그들이 돈을 벌기 위해 하는 일이 매우 다양하다고 말했습니다.

Because the information is still true, we don't have to change the present tense to past tense.

 

• Theo said they had had their website up and running within two days.

  테오는 그들이 웹사이트를 만들어 2일간 운영했다고 말했습니다.

Because a lot of time has passed between the moment it happened and reporting it, we change "had" to "had had".

 

• She said they'd started off in their camper van.

  그녀는 그들이 캠핑카로 시작했다고 말했습니다.

When we report somebody's words, we need to adjust the reference to people to the speaker's perspective.

 

• Bee said many people had wanted to buy prints all the time.

  비는 많은 사람이 항상 복제화를 사고 싶어 했다고 말했습니다.

Because a lot of time has passed between the moment it happened and reporting it, we change "wanted" to "had wanted".

 

• Bee said they've been travelling since 2014.

  비는 그들이 2014년부터 여행해 왔다고 말했습니다.

Because the sentence is still true at the moment of reporting it, we don't change the original verb tense.

 

• Theo said they would see us on the next video.

  테오는 그들이 다음 영상에서 우리를 볼 것이라고 말했습니다.

When we report somebody's words, we need to adjust the reference to people and verb tense to the speaker's perspective.

 Informal alternatives to reported speech 

 

Reported speech is often omitted in informal spoken conversations. Instead, you can hear "she was like" / "she went" to report somebody else's words.

Both forms are used with direct speech so you don't have to change tenses or references to people, places and times.

I/she/he was like...	She was like, "I don't get why you don't respond to my texts".
I/she/he went...	And I went, "What are you talking about?"

 

• I was like, "I respond when I can."

  난 "가능할 때 답해"라고 말했어.

 

• And she went, "I see you active on social media so why not reply to my messages."

  그러자 그녀는 "SNS는 하면서 왜 내 메시지에는 답을 안 해?"라고 물었어.

 

• She was like, "I'm not available."

  그녀는 "난 바빴어"라고 했어.
