※ flatmate : you share a flat/apartment.
   roommate : you share a room

 

 

 When do we use the past perfect?  

 

When there are two events in the past, we use the past perfect (e.g. had gone, had worked) to talk about the event that happened first.
We often use "before", "after", and "already" to show which event happened first.

Event that happened first	Event that happened next
She had gone on many dates before (...)	(...) she met her future husband.

We had already gone on five dates  before I learnt what his job was.

 

 How do we form the past perfect?  

 

The past perfect = had (not) + past participle (e.g, eaten, gone, driven, moved)

I had already eaten dinner before my boyfriend phoned.

 

• I had already gone to bed when my girlfriend came back from work.

  여자친구가 퇴근하고 돌아왔을 때 저는 이미 잠자리에 든 상태였어요.

      The past perfect = "had" + past participle

 

• They had already known they were not compatible before they moved in together.

  동거를 시작하기 전 그들은 서로 맞지 않는다는 걸 이미 알고 있었어요.

       The past perfect of "know" – "had known".

 

• She had already had a crush on him when they got officially introduced.

  그들이 정식으로 서로 소개받았을 때 그녀는 이미 그에게 반했었어요.

The past perfect of "have" = had had

 

 

• We'd been together for 10 years when we realised we were not fully compatible.
• 우리는 10년 동안 함께 지냈지만 서로 완전히 호환되지 않는다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

Actually, I had been in love with her for two years before I sat next to her on that bus and spoke to her.

• They had been friends for years before they even realised they had feelings for each other.

• We had already gone to the same parties but then something changed.

  우리는 이미 같은 파티들에 다녔었지만 무언가 변했어요.

The past participle of "to go" is "gone".

 

• We had hung out with our mutual friends before we started dating.

  사귀기 시작하기 전 우리는 서로 아는 친구들과 놀았었어요.

The event that happened takes the past perfect – had hung out.

After Salim’s relationship had ended, he decided to be a better boyfriend.

However, he had no girlfriend to be a better boyfriend to.

He set himself a rather impossible challenge - finding a girlfriend and making her fall in love with him in only five days.

 

Part 1

 

I’ve been single for exactly 360 days.

According to my conservative mother, it’s too long.

“When I was your age, I'd already had you, and you'd already grown facial hair,”

she gently reminded me.

According to my therapist, time is relative, and we don’t need anybody to make us happy.

It’d be easier to believe her if she didn’t have pictures of her happy kids and perfect husband everywhere.

We’d been together for five years before, one morning, my ex-girlfriend told me we weren't compatible anymore.

After we’d broken up, my life didn’t change too much - I still went to work, met my friends, had dinner at my mum’s, and watched my favourite series.

I started to understand what my ex-girlfriend meant by “not compatible”.

I think I was mainly compatible with my friends’ beer-drinking habits, my mum’s cooking and my streaming services.

 

 

Could I be a better boyfriend next time? According to my therapist, I can be anything I want to be. According to my mum, I’m talented but lazy, so maybe if I just work a bit harder, I can be a great boyfriend. The kind of boyfriend her friends would be jealous of.

The kind of boyfriend whose picture she'd keep on her phone screensaver.

I’ve been single for exactly 360 days.

But I will find myself a girlfriend and make her happy before a year has passed - although I only have five days to fall in love.
